Happy Memorial Day

A few Saturdays ago, I pulled out some stacks of old pictures and went through them with my family. I was struck by how cute and precious my children were as infants and tiny people. So focused on the needs and joys of today, I had forgotten some of those stages. It was fun to take time to remember together, to laugh about earlier times and adventures. Later that day, I sat in an auditorium as a speaker talked about the value of memory, how just being able to remember is a true gift.

Remembering is powerful! It shifts our focus from our current challenges and circumstances, and spotlights the beauty of relationships, the reality of what is most important, and the faithfulness of God who has brought us to today. The Psalmist David understood the power of remembering:

Psalm 103:1-5 (NKJV)

¹Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

²Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: ³Who forgives all

your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, ⁴Who redeems your life from de-

struction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, ⁵Who

satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the

eagle’s.

Today as a country, we have the opportunity to remember together. To honor the service of the valiant men and women in our military (past and present), to recognize the genuine sacrifices made by both them and their families. Let’s not forget all the benefits of living in this wonderful country, whose heart’s cry I pray will always be: one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you to those who have served our country, even at the cost of their very lives. We remember.

Thank you to those who continue to serve today. We value your courage and dedication.

Thank you to the families of those in the military. We recognize your sacrifice.

It’s Good Friday

Have you ever been working out and only had to last FOUR MORE MINUTES, yet it felt like eternity? That’s me on most workouts! I was reading the Easter story this week and realized I’d never considered how long Christ hung suffering on that cross for us. Answer: 6 hours. I wonder how many times Jesus had to remind himself, hanging there, that the pain He was experiencing was only temporary, that He only had to last a little bit longer, that the end result was worth it all…
How thankful I am that Christ chose to bear our shame, pain, sickness, and sin so we wouldn’t have to one day. May this Good Friday be a special day of gratitude as we reflect on what an amazing thing Christ did for us. And how very much He loves us.
